You are the salt of the earth. 
But if salt loses its saltiness, how will it become salty again? 
It's good for nothing except to be thrown away and trampled under people's feet.

Jesus is using this analogy of salt to describe some aspect of the people he is talking to (& by extension, us).
Salt.
The salt of the earth. 
There's something there that's so important, that makes a difference, that brings flavour. 
And if it's lost, well, were discarded. 
Have you ever wondered what Jesus meant when he says we're the salt? 
The flavour 
The zing 
The life
Salt brings out the flavour of the other ingredients.
Maybe that's what this is about...Jesus calls us to bring out all the goodness and flavour in those around us.
