How can a young person live a clean life? By carefully reading the map of your Word. I'm single-minded in pursuit of you don't let me miss the road signs you've posted. I've banked your promises in the vault of my heart so I wont sin myself bankrupt... Psalm 119:6 MSG Got stuff to sort out in your life? 1. Get into God's Word for yourself. Do your own learning 2. Choose to follow God & His ways regardless of the consequences. It might be embarrassing, might be costly, but do it anyway 3. Hide God's Word in your heart. Read it. Memorise it. If we can get to church today, before we go, let's  ask God to speak to us through the word, the song, the people, His Spirit...look out for His road signs :) #psalms #psalm119 #theroad #inthistogether
Lord , sustain me as you promised, that I may live! Do not let my hope be crushed. Sustain me, and I will be rescued; then I will meditate continually on your decrees. Psalms 119:116-117 NLT Ever feel like your at the end of you're endurance, that your strength is gone...that hope is gone... the psalmist here is in exactly that place... And where does he turn? Not away from God but towards Him. He knows that ultimately all hope rests only in God - our hope for life eternal, our hope of when all things will be made new, our hope of the end of pain, hurt, loss & even death itself...and in the meantime he keeps calling out to the One (even tho it seems answers aren't forthcoming) he keeps searching God's word (even tho today it may seem lifeless and void) So when our own resources  are depleted...keep coming back to God... #hope
You are my refuge and my shield; your word is my source of hope. Psalms 119:114 NLT To need a refuge and a shield their must be something to fear, something we need protection from...what is it in your life? For me it's often the battle within...about choices, attitudes, actions...fears... What about you? And where do we turn? The Psalmist looks to our God first & foremost. And it is in Him that hope is placed. In His word. The word became flesh and dwelled amongst us, personified God, represents God to us, and represents us to God. In him is my hope. That Jesus is who he said he is...and that one day all will be made new #jesusatthecentre #sunday #worship #thisisourGod #hope
You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word. Psalm 119:114 NIV A great verse to tuck away in our hearts... A town of refuge was a place that you could go - to be safe A shield protects in the hand to hand battle, the arrows, the swords... There are times when we all need to seek refuge, & we all have battles...whether it's the hurtful words from our past, our own thought life that turns against us, or the words and actions of others...maybe it's physical disability or pain that won't retreat...whatever it is for you & me, the psalmist asks where do you put your hope? The Word. The living Word. #jesusatthecentre #hope #onedayallwillbemadenew   #inthistogether
Your laws are my treasure; they are my heart's delight. I am determined to keep your decrees to the very end. Psalms 119:111-112 NLT Determined. Sometimes it takes a real act of the will to live the way God would have us live...and Monday is often one of the hardest days... Love God - what does that look like for me today? Love People - what does that look like for me today? We're not going to get it right every day, but determine to try, to the very end of our days... #psalms #psalm119 #theroad #inthistogether #presson
Your laws are my treasure; they are my heart's delight. I am determined to keep your decrees to the very end. Psalms 119:111-112 NLT Do I delight in God's word? The Psalmist may have only had the first few books of the Old Testament...but we know that God's word points to one person - to Jesus. He is The Word. The word that spoke at  creation, & who speaks life to us today The Word who came in love, who wants nothing more (& nothing less) than our heart's to be oriented towards him - to delight in him as he delights in us... #psalms #psalm119 #theroad #inthistogether #presson #jesusatthecentre #sunday #worship #thisisourGod
The wicked have set their traps for me, but I will not turn from your commandments. Psalms 119:110 NLT Traps. What is it that traps us? Is it comparing ourselves with others, wanting what someone else has... is it what we allow ourselves to think about...or do...what traps us? The psalm writer knows that the traps are there, but the way to see and avoid them is to know God's word, read it, learn it, hide it in your heart, allow it to shape your thinking, actions, attitudes...& choices. Don't wait for Sunday to open God's word, & as we read, ask God to reveal the traps we're susceptible to... Jesus was the master at seeing what trapped people & what would set them free... #trapsandhowtoavoidthem #stickwithGodsword #jesusatthecentre
I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws. Psalm 119:106 NIV I'm comitted. No turning back. I've chosen God's path and I'm going to follow it...no matter what... This is not about the church you attend or the version of the Bible you like, but our heart orientation towards God. The previous verse is about God's word as a lamp, we like that, but will we today, as the psalmist does here, reconfirm our commitment to follow it? #psalms #psalm119 #theroad #inthistogether #presson #comitted Hope you're getting some value from verseoftheday, but if you no longer want to receive it that's OK, just let whoever your getting it from know and they'll drop you off the list :)
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105 NIV Like a light on my path God's word gives direction, lights the way to our ultimate destination...whether it's the Big Story of God thru history, the grace and forgiveness found in Jesus... the personal reflections found in psalms etc etc there is light for our path, no matter that mine is different to yours, the living word gives light to all of us. #psalms #psalm119 #theroad #inthistogether
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105 NIV Feet. Path. Move... This life is not about sitting still...last week Paul was talking about pressing on, here the psalm is about light, but light for the path, the journey... That doesn't mean we've always got to be doing stuff...there is rest &  restoration... the journey is to become more like Jesus...and God's word is the light for that... #psalms #psalm119 #theroad #inthistogether
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105 NIV A lamp for my feet stops me tripping over obstacles that might otherwise have made me stumble and fall. If we allow God's word to be that lamp... here's an example... I trip up because my words are harsh and I lash out with "you always..." & "you never..." Phil 4v5 Let your gentleness be evident to all 1 Cor 13v5 Love keeps no record of being wronged Lamplight to my feet to stop me stumbling in the dark of my selfishness and pride We just need to allow the Word to light our path...to be a permanent fixture in our lives...yesterday's proverb stops me holding things for myself...look at God's word as a lamp lighting our path... #psalms #psalm119 #theroad #inthistogether
Oh, how I love all you've revealed; I reverently ponder it all the day long. Your commands give me an edge on my enemies; they never become obsolete. I've even become smarter than my teachers since I've pondered and absorbed your counsel. I've become wiser than the wise old sages simply by doing what you tell me. I watch my step, avoiding the ditches and ruts of evil so I can spend all my time keeping your Word. I never make detours from the route you laid out; you gave me such good directions. Your words are so choice, so tasty; I prefer them to the best home cooking. With your instruction, I understand life... Psalm 119:97-104 MSG What jumps out at you from this? For me it's absorbing God's counsel...taking in his word and living it out in my everyday life...what about you? #psalms #psalms119
What you say goes, God, and stays, as permanent as the heavens. Your truth never goes out of fashion; it's as up to date as the earth when the sun comes up. Your Word and truth are dependable as ever; that's what you ordered - you set the earth going. If your revelation hadn't delighted me so, I would have given up when the hard times came. But I'll never forget the advice you gave me; you saved my life with those wise words. Save me! I"m all yours. I look high and low for your words of wisdom. The wicked lie in ambush to destroy me, but I'm only concerned with your plans for me. I see the limits to everything human, but the horizons can't contain your commands! Psalm 119 89-96 MSG #psalms #psalm119 #theroad #believe
The arrogant dig pits to trap me...help me, for I am being persecuted without cause. They almost wiped me from the earth, but I have not forsaken your precepts. In your unfailing love preserve my life... Psalm 119:85-88 NIV That's pressure. Stress. Whatever was going on it felt like he was at the end of what he could endure. But. He was sticking with God. Sticking with His ways & acknowledging God's unfailing love...regardless of the circumstances...the pressure...the stress... So...when the pressure is on keep doing what's right,  and always, always remember that you're a dearly loved child of God. #psalms #psalm119 #theroad #inthistogether #dearlyloved #childrenofGod
My soul faints with longing for your salvation, but I have put my hope in your word. My eyes fail, looking for your promise; I say, "When will you comfort me?" Psalm 119:81-82 NIV Can you feel the hurt here...my soul faints...my eyes fail...your promises seem like they'll never be fulfilled... Life hurts and God you don't seem to be hearing me... But - I have put my hope in your word - if God and his story makes sense in the good times, choose to hang on to it when days are hard. Does life without God make more sense? Evelyn Underhill said "If God were small enough to be understood, he wouldn't be big enough to be worshipped" #psalms #psalm119 #theroad #inthistogether
May I wholeheartedly follow your decrees, that I may not be put to shame. Psalm 119:80 NIV The Psalms are great because they give us permission to be real with God, to tell Him how things are for us...here it seems he really wants to follow God's ways - wants to be wholehearted in his faith - but clearly isn't right now...so no matter how you're feeling right now, express it to God, whether it's good or not...maybe like the psalmist you really want to be wholehearted in your faith...or maybe it's something different...tell Him. If your heart is full of praise - great! - tell Him that too John Newton said if we're not getting much out of going to God in prayer, we will certainly get nothing out of staying away... #psalms #psalm119 #theroad
Let me be united with all who fear you, with those who know your laws. Psalms 119:79 NLT You'd think that by now we (the christian community) wouldn't still need to be reminded about unity...but this is an age old thing...the psalmist here wants all those who know God's law to be united...to be on the same page... Am I an agent of unity or disunity? Am I about the things we agree about or the things we disagree about? We're human, don't always get things right, as we learn, grow, understand our views on things change...but our unity as Christ followers should always remain... #somethingtochewon #psalms #psalm119 #theroad
Bring disgrace upon the arrogant people who lied about me; meanwhile, I will concentrate on your commandments. Psalms 119:78 NLT The writer has been lied about, maybe gossiped about, publicly slandered...and he or she is not happy about it. (It's one of the great things about Psalms is they express what's really going on... and that's OK.) So unhappy there's a request to God for public disgrace to be heaped on those who lied. But...having expressed his feelings he then leaves it with God and focuses on what is right...getting back to God's Word. It's OK to talk to God about how we really feel...and in this instance about another person...but then leave it with Him and get back to how He would have you live... #psalms #psalm119 #theroad #inthistogether
I know, Lord , that your laws are righteous, and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me. May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant. Psalm 119:75-76 NIV Sometimes when we read God's word it stings. I'm so far from being who I should be...or we look at what God says about something and find it hard to follow. It's simply not what we want to do. Not sure what's going on in the psalmists life but he says: God you are good. But what you say hurts. I know you love me. Show me that today. I still choose you. No matter what...God is Unfailing Love. When He is silent, unfathomable, when things are good, or not going our way...Unfailing Love. #youaredearlyloved
May those who fear you rejoice when they see me, for I have put my hope in your word. Psalm 119:74 NIV People were pleased to see the psalmist because he represented Hope. Hope in The Word. Somehow he was a walking, talking representation of hope in God. Regardless of circumstances. How can I be that guy? Who people are pleased to see because of the hope that resides in me? This is a picture of Jesus. He was that representation of hope, & asks us to be the same to a hurting world. Hope anchored in the Word Hope that reaches out Be that hope. #psalms #psalm119 #myhopeisbuiltonnothinglessthanJesusbloodandrighteousness
