The Lord is near to the brokenhearted... Psalms 34:18 ESV The Lord. Yahweh. Is near. To those whose inner self, who's heart Is being broken into pieces. The word here is "shabar" and it's not a noun that would describe a state something is in (eg the bowl is broken) but a verb - to break, break in pieces. Our heart is not a static thing that is "broken" and then "fixed". It's a living thing. It's us. Who we are. Who I am. And we are being broken. Into pieces By the world Our own sin The sin of others The lies of the enemy Sometimes by God - we even sing about it sometimes ("break my heart for what breaks yours") And it can be broken for others. I was cupbearer to the king. Nehemiah 1:11 NIV He's a waiter. Although privy to a lot of secrets and talks of the rich and powerful...he's not rich and powerful. Yet there is no hint of "I'm just a cupbearer" Why? His heart had been broken for his people and he was talking to God about it. His job, his position in society wasn't a barrier or the way forward...it just was what it was. It's what broke his heart that was most important. So what breaks our hearts?
