Proverbs!
An inheritance claimed too soon will not be blessed at the end.
Proverbs 20:21 NIV
Inheritance was a big thing for maintaining and developing wealth for a family. Not the small Mum, Dad, 2.2 children of the western nuclear family, but the bigger clan. Think Abram and all his household.
And what's going on in this proverb?
Someone wants a future blessing now.
I want it now.
I don't want to wait.
To wait for you to die.
I've got better ideas
My ideas.
Jesus picks up on this in Luke 15 with the son who lives out this proverb and squanders his inheritance by claiming it early and allowing his selfishness and desire to rule his life.
This proverb and Jesus story is about our heart.
Our hearts that we have to keep turning back to God, to keep realigning with Him.
Jesus story has a component that this proverb lacks : a loving and grace filled Father who's arms are open wide for us whenever we turn to Him.
Rest in that today.
