There was one named Barabbas...who had committed murder...
Pilate asked them again, "Then what do you want me to do with the one you call the King of the Jews?" Again they shouted, "Crucify him!"
Pilate said to them,
"Why? What has he done wrong?"
Mark 15:7, 12-14 CSB
There's Barabbas.
Guilty.
There's the crowd, stirred up by the fake news of the Pharisees.
There's Pilate, who sees Jesus more clearly for who he is than anyone else, but in this moment lacks the moral courage to act. To do what he knows is right.
And there's Jesus.
The God/man.
The perfect, holy, clean, pure, God-entering-his-story to become sin for all of us.
For me.
He stands alone.
Before the power of the world, popular opinion, and a guilty person.
Barabbas.
Barabbas represents me this Easter Friday.
Barabbas, whose name means "son of the father", though guilty, is set free.
The true "son of the father" though innocent, takes the punishment.
Jesus goes to the cross, the innocent for the guilty.
Jesus took my place.
