Then Jesus answered him,
"What do you want me to do for you?"
"Rabboni," the blind man said to him,
"I want to see."
Mark 10:51 CSB
The crowd has stopped.
In the crowd are James and John who just a little way up the road asked/demanded that Jesus ask them this very question:
"What do you want me to do for you?"
But here Jesus asks it willingly.
He asks it in front of James & John. Their hearts at least in that moment had been about power, what they could get, to grow their own "kingdom".
And here Jesus asks a man who has nothing except a coat that he's discarded, what it is that he wants.
Ask for anything.
When Jesus asks a question it's not for Jesus to learn something. Jesus already knew Bartimaeus's heart.
This question was for James and John.
And for me.
Jesus asks, when you grasp who I am as Bart has, what do you want me to do for you?
James & John wanted power.
Bart, who had spent a good chunk of his adult life with his head down, begging others for his survival, he says literally "I want to look up".
"To see."
Knowing who Jesus is, changes everything.
