Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, 
"If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples.
You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
"We are descendants of Abraham", they answered him, "and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, 'You will become free'?"
John 8:31-33 CSB
They seem to have conveniently forgotten about being enslaved in Egypt, and that they were currently colonised by the Romans. Perhaps because their culture and religion was intact they saw that they were still free as a people.
But Jesus is niggling away here that there is truth that you're not grasping, and on the other side of that truth is freedom.
A deeper freedom.
Continue in the word. The logos.
That's the path to freedom. 
I like to shortcut that and just listen to a pastor or preacher, let someone else do the work. 
Jesus tells these people to continue in the word, for themselves.
The logos, the word, was right there in front of them. Not rules or religion, not performance or ritual, but a person.
