"In the law Moses commanded us to stone such women.
So what do you say?"
They asked this to trap him, in order that they might have evidence to accuse him.
Jesus stooped down and started writing on the ground with his finger. When they persisted in questioning him, he stood up and said to them...
John 8:5-7 CSB
Do you wonder how long Jesus was writing in the dirt?
The Pharisees were weaponising the Bible, and in the face of their aggressive tactic Jesus just let them go.
Quite a good thing to remember when things get heated.
The law was given so that the people would know who God is, and that they would thrive (Deuteronomy 6).
It's not a weapon to accuse, to weild power against the vulnerable, to get my way or to prove my point.
It's God's revelation of who He is, how He wants to restore what has been broken, it points to our Redeemer, the one who came to speak life and healing and hope.
And Jesus was right there.
They were so annoyed, so wanting to hold onto their power, so wanting to save themselves, that they didn't see Jesus when he was right there.
And they didn't see the woman who bore his image, the person, the person with a story.
Jesus did though.
And He does.
He sees you.
He stooped down. Down from the glories of heaven to sit in the dust with us, and doodle in the dirt.
Jesus is the Word.
He didn't come as a weapon, but as a person, a servant, a suffering saviour, to make a way, to be the way for us.
