Proverbs!
A whip for the horse,
a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the backs of fools!
Proverbs 26:3 BSB
I don't know anything about horses or donkeys, but these word pictures are here to tell us something, and we know that Proverbs is really all about the heart, so if we put aside using this proverb as a means of hurting someone else, what does it say about my heart?
It's stubborn.
Doesn't move in the direction that reflect God's character and heart easily, wants to go it's own way, do what is easy for me.
Sometimes I need a wake up, direction, something to get my attention.
Perhaps looking at the 12 Proverbs in Ch 26 which talk to "the fool" will give a more rounded view of this Proverb. That section ends with this:
Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
Proverbs 26:12 BSB
This section of Proverbs is about getting me to think about me, whether God's values and heart are really leading in me, or not, whether I really am walking in wisdom.
I'm wondering where I need a nudge today?
