But some of the scribes were sitting there debating in their hearts [the implication of what He had said],
"Why does this man talk that way?
He is blaspheming;
who can forgive sins [remove guilt,
nullify sins penalty,
and assign righteousness] except God alone?"
Mark 2:6-7AMP
Who does this guy think he is?
God?
These guys were the keepers of the law. The New Testament had not been written, and here's this Jesus character preaching and crowds are filling venues to hear him...and he is claiming to be, well, God.
As CS Lewis put it, Jesus doesn't give us an option of seeing him as a good teacher.
Here in the early days he is clear, and we have to choose;
Is he a liar
A lunatic
or Lord.
For these guys it was clear he was claiming to be Lord.
He is the One with authority to nullify the penalty of my sin, and to assign righteousness to my name.
The only One who could.

Joseph replied..."Dont you see, you planned evil against me but God used those same plans for my good, as you see all around you right now - life for many people..." Genesis 50:19-20 MSG The view from the drone. The different perspective. "God has been at work in my life despite, in fact within the hatred that you had towards me. Even though I couldn't always see it, I kept trusting Him, even when He was silent, when all hope seemed lost... God was at work... Can you see that now?" #faith #faithinthedark
