When you came to Christ, you were "circumcised", but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision - the cutting away of your sinful nature. For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.
Colossians 2:11-12 NLT
Symbols and rituals in our physical world that represent and remind us of what has happened for us and to us in the spirit.
God has and is cutting things away. Old things buried with Jesus, and new things brought to life.
Paul says my sinful nature has been cut away, yet I still seem to have it. This "new life" is still full of my stuff, my "old life", and yet something has changed. The weight of my sinful nature has been absorbed by Jesus, and my heart direction and heart desires are slowly shifting, catching up, catching on to what Jesus has done, and is doing.
It's like who I am is slowly becoming the redeemed me, the free me.
That picture comes to minf of a person who's parents were slaves, who was born into slavery, who has known nothing but slavery, has now been set free.
Freedom paid for.
And that person is now learning to live in that freedom, discovering little by little what freedom is, moving away from the fears and habits of the old life step by step.
Completely free, yet becoming free.
The now and the not yet.
