I don't say this out of need,
for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I find myself.
I know how to make do with little,
and I know how to make do with a lot.
In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content - whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need.
I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:11-13 CSB
Motivational speakers love this last sentence, rugby players write it on wristbands as a talisman to greater performance.
But Paul doesn't seem to be interested at all in performance, but in our hearts. This is another version of finding peace.
Peace that does not depend on circumstances, whether they're great or terrible.
Paul's lockdown lesson is to keep our eyes on Jesus, to lean into Him as our strength whether life is going well or not.
We're as much at risk of losing sight of Jesus in times of plenty as in times of need.
