You hold my eyelids open; I am so troubled
that I cannot speak.
Psalms 77:4 ESV
Imagine singing this song in church!
I can't sleep at night
I'm so overwhelmed I can't even speak,
I have no words.
Sometimes we're asked to check our week in at the door and leave our troubles "out there" somewhere, but this song, these words from the middle of our Bible tell us to bring our most difficult, most heart rending things, the things that disturb our sleep, the things that seem too big, and bring them with us into church, into community, into His light.
Jesus always meets us where we are.
He doesn't say "come back when you're smiling", or command us to look happy, He welcomes with open arms.
Always.
The song writer here was not OK.
It's OK for us not to be OK.
That this song is in the Bible tells us that our God understands the difficult times, and that there is hope.
Our hope is not in our circumstances or things but in a person. The person who will make all things new.
