Mark 11:7-9 CEB
They brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes upon it, and he sat on it.
Many people spread out their clothes on the road while others spread branches cut from the fields.
Those in front of him and those following were shouting,
"Hosanna!
Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord!"
Mark 11:7-9 CEB
Hosanna literally means "save now".
There's a procession thru the city with Jesus riding on this young donkey that's never been ridden, with crowds and chanting and waving palm fronds.
Redemption is here.
Jesus is going to save them now.
Everything will be different as they'll be set free - free from the Empire.
Free from repression.
Poverty
Being less than.
This is the redemptive strand that they're expecting to follow...
But they didn't see the signs Jesus gave them. Not a big horse symbolising power, but a small young donkey who'd never been ridden.
No warriors.
No weapons.
No symbols if power.
"Save now!" "Hosanna".
As I sit with this part of Jesus story I wonder where I want Jesus to "save now" on my terms.
To save me now from something.
Being saved from the Empire is a good thing, but it's not The Thing.
The Thing was being and becoming The Way,
The Way for all of us to be right with our God.
The Thing was Grace.
The Thing was Love.
Love in action.
The Thing was being the Gift, the Lamb, the Way.
