They were terrified,
but the angel reassured them.
"Dont be afraid!" he said.
"I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior - yes, the Messiah, the Lord - has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!
And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger." Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others - the armies of heaven - praising God and saying, "Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased."
Luke 2:9-14 NLT
The shepherds got a shock, experienced something unexpected, were afraid, and yet it turned out to be the best thing ever.
In the unexpected, the shocks, the goodness, the planned, whatever life holds, may we hold the words of the angel, that there is Good News, a Bigger Story, that our Saviour, Messiah, Lord, has arrived.
We don't have a baby wrapped snugly to check out this story, but we do have the acts of grace, love, forgiveness and mercy that we receive from one another.
We do have the Spirit at work in us, gently, quietly, moving and tending our hearts, & the hope we have in the risen Jesus, that there is more.
And we have the words of the Angels to hold, and to join with:
Don't be afraid
This is Good News
Glory to God
Peace, peace on earth
