When I left for Macedonia, I asked you to stay behind in Ephesus so that you could instruct certain individuals not to spread wrong teaching.
They shouldn't pay attention to myths and endless genealogies. Their teaching only causes useless guessing games instead of faithfulness to God's way of doing things.
The goal of instruction is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.
1 Timothy 1:3-5 CEB
Back in the day (the 1980's?) there was a well known motivational speaker, Zig Ziglar, & one of his quotes was:
"The main thing
is to keep
the main thing
the main thing"
And that's what Paul is asking Timothy to work with people in the church in Ephesus to do.
They're getting lost in arguments and ideas that have caused them to lose sight of the main thing;
Love.
To strengthen our faith, to challenge or develop our thinking, & work on the heart from which love finds its expression in the world.
That's the main thing.
To love.
If we're missing Love in church, in the teaching, in our reading of God's word, in our way of being in the world, we're missing the main thing.
Stick with the main thing.
Love.
"Agape", the other oriented outward looking, life changing, world changing love.
Keep that the main thing
