Why, my soul,
are you so dejected?
Why are you in such turmoil?
Put your hope in God,
for I will still praise him, my Savior and my God.
I am deeply depressed; therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and the peaks of Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls;
Psalms 42:5-7 CSB
The psalmist is giving us a glimpse here of his self-talk!
In his seriously down mood, he tells himself some truth.
Reminds himself of where his hope lies, even though he can't feel it or maybe doesn't even believe it right now.
He acknowledges what's going on for him, and reminds himself of the truth.
We can follow that pattern too.
Acknowledge what's going on.
Remind ourselves of what is true.
If we can't figure out what's true, find a trusted person who can help with that. Go to your favourite scripture. Remind ourselves of what is true even when it's hard to believe.
You are beloved.
And then there's this wonderful phrase:
"deep calls to deep"
There's something in us that connects with God, with one another, with the created world.
The writer finds this in the roar of the waterfall.
For each of us that might be different, but that deep part of us that longs for communion...it seems that is what our God wants too.
