Hear my cry,
O God,
listen to my prayer;
from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint.
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I,
for you have been my refuge,
a strong tower against the enemy.
Psalm 61:1-3 ESV
"Lead me to the rock that is higher than I."
"Lead me."
I don't know the way, can't see the way, could never find the way, without you.
I can't do this on my own.
Lead me.
"To the rock"
When things feel uncertain (like going back to Level 2/3), when there's change in our lives, especially change we haven't asked for, nothing feels solid.
We want solid.
We want rock.
"That is higher than I"
This is not a place I can get to on my own.
It's beyond me.
Beyond my ability or power to get there.
I think this song is pointing forward not to a place, but a person.
Jesus is God in the flesh, the fullness of God in a form that we can grasp.
He is the rock, the solid place, the place of safety, refuge.
We couldn't get to him, so he made himself small, and came to us.
He made the way.
Made the way for us.
We can trust him, cling to him, rest in him.
When the storms of life are smashing in, when all feels like shifting sand, and when things are good, it is the "rock that is higher than I" who we hold on to.
