Mark 6:1-3 NLT
Jesus left that part of the country and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his hometown.
The next Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. They asked, "Where did he get all this wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?"
Then they scoffed,
"He's just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us."
They were deeply offended and refused to believe in him.
Mark 6:1-3 NLT
If you've ever been rejected by the people who are supposed to care for you, you're in good company.
If you're not seen, judged, looked down on, then your story is also Jesus story.
Seems like there's a cultural expectation here too - if Jesus is such an important Rabbi why are his sisters still living here?
(I wonder about the times I haven't been able to see past my expectations or cultural norms and missed the person...).
Even though they heard his teaching, even though they were amazed by his wisdom, Jesus community still rejected him.
His family still rejected him.
They just didn't get him.
He knows what it's like, what it feels like, just how much it can hurt.
