God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all,
and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important.
1 Corinthians 1:28 NLT
Tonight I'm going to a concert to raise some money to send to a village in the middle of Africa where most of the people who live there have leprosy.
A village of beautiful people, yet who carry the scars and ravages of a disease they didn't ask for or deserve in any way. In the world's measure, they would be "counted as nothing at all".
In God's economy they are no less loved, no less valued than those the world calls important. Maybe more so.
Paul is writing to a church that has its values upsidedown, and gives them an opportunity to see that, to choose to see those who their culture says are the least, to hear their stories, to learn not just about them, but about the heart of God.
I get sucked into the values of my culture all the time, sometimes they're good, but often they aren't.
Maybe today you feel like you're "despised by the world". Know that Jesus himself was in that same place, his heart is for you.
Paul reminds us here that those the world discards, our God does not (& neither should we).

Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,  for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can't see - such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. Colossians 1:15-16 NLT OK so this is an English translation of a letter Paul wrote to a church 2,000 years ago, but does it feel like Paul is wrestling with words and ideas to try and capture all of who Jesus is, of who God is, of how does it work that the walking around Jesus was also there before the beginning of the beginning of everything we can see and touch and know. Not only that but Jesus was somehow the agent of everything that has been made in the physical, social, and spiritual.  Jesus is at the centre of it all.  Walking around Jesus. Cooking fish for breakfast Jesus. Heart aching as he looks at p
"Do not despise these small beginnings,  for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin,  to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel's hand." Zechariah 4:10 NLT At the centre of this story is not something shiny, something new, but the damaged, broken down ruins.  Jesus met people where they were, in the brokenness, in their hurt, in the mess. That's where he was.  We can tend to hide away the damage, sideline it, perhaps feature it only when there's been restoration.  But this story says something different.  Jesus life tells us something different. God is delighting in the small things going on in the broken down temple. He isn't saying "when it's all fixed up and looking good then I'm interested".  No, He is invested now.  Right now.  Right where we are.  Come as you are to church, to community, to fellowship, to friendship. Jesus never sidelines the hurt parts, never says they don't matter, and we don't need to either... #smallbeginnings #t
What is the source of wars and fights among you?  Don't they come from your passions that wage war within you?  You desire and do not have.  You murder and covet and cannot obtain.  You fight and wage war. You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and don't receive because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. James 4:1-3 CSB Ouch! This is all about my motives.  What's really going on in my heart that triggers the internal battle, and then the actions I take, the things I do, the things I say. I don't actually murder anyone, but I have had no problem judging someones character on very little evidence, disregarding people because they hold an opinion that I don't, want what someone else has, covet their privilege while ignoring mine...the list goes on... James in the most loving way possible wants us to "get underneath the hood" and asks us to have a good look at what makes us tick. Not because he's any different,
